Metal core PCB manufacturing process

The production process of MCPCB mainly includes the following steps:

1.materials
Cut to the size required for production according to customer requirements, and check whether there are scratches, delamination or burrs on the front and back of the aluminum substrate.

2. Drilling
Positioning and drilling of panels to provide assistance for subsequent manufacturing processes and customer assembly. Pay attention to the number, size, positional deviation and cape of holes.

3. Dry/wet film imaging
Including grinding, film, exposure, development and other steps. Check whether there is an open circuit in the circuit, whether there is any deviation in the development alignment, whether there is air residue in the exposure, etc.

4. Etching
After etching, film removal, drying, plate inspection and other steps are performed. Pay attention to the uniformity of etching to avoid over-etching or under-etching.

5. Solder mask
Silk screen solder mask, characters. Used to mark and protect lines.

6. Gong board
Perform V-cut, CUT and other processing to form the required shape and size.

7.Testing
Check whether the completed line is working properly.

8.Aluminum base surface treatment
Including cleaning, passivation, coating and other steps to protect the surface of the aluminum substrate and improve its performance.

9. Final inspection
Check the size, surface quality, thermal conductivity, etc. of the product.

10.Packaging
Ensure product is not damaged during transportation and storage.

What is MCPCB(Metal Core PCB)?

Metal core PCBs (MCPCBs) are PCBs that have a metal core, usually made of aluminum and copper alloy, instead of the traditional FR4 PCB(Fiberglass Reinforced Epoxy). The metal core PCB has better thermal conductivity and more efficient heat dissipation. As a result, aluminum PCBs is ideal for high-power applications such as swimming pool LED lighting, power electronics, and LED car lighting and hotel lighting.

Types of Metal Core PCBs
Types of Metal Core PCBs
Single-layer metal core PCB
Single-layer metal core PCB is the simplest MCPCB, which is only composed of a copper layer as the circuit trace, a thermal conductivity layer and a metal base (normally is aluminum or copper).

Two-layer metal core PCB
Two-layer MCPCB means it has two layers circuit layer on this board. But different with double-sided MCPCB, both two layers copper traces are on the same side and metal base located on the bottom side of circuit board.

Multilayer Metal Core PCB
Compared to standard FR4 PCBs, the construction of multilayer MCPCBs requires advanced technology and expertise in laminating multiple layers together with a metal core. As a result, the cost of multilayer MCPCBs is significantly higher than that of 2-layer or double-sided MCPCBs.
